Before and After Photos

Procedure

A male breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce excess breast tissue in men, a condition known as gynecomastia. The procedure can involve liposuction to remove excess fat, excision to remove glandular tissue, or a combination of both techniques.

The goal of the procedure is to give men a more defined chest contour and boost their self-confidence.

Male breast reduction is a safe and effective option for men who are unhappy with the appearance of their chest due to gynecomastia.

Details

Male breast reduction typically involves a combination of liposuction and glandular tissue excision. During the procedure, Dr. Gartner will make small incisions in the chest area and remove excess fat and glandular tissue. In some cases, excess skin may also be removed to create a more defined chest contour.

The exact technique used will depend on the severity of the gynecomastia and the individual patient’s goals. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours.

Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to work and normal activities within a few weeks. The results of a male breast reduction are typically long-lasting, with many patients reporting improved confidence and self-esteem following the procedure.

Risks

IRREGULAR SCARRING

Your scars may become more prominent if you have a history of hypertrophic scarring, however, most scars heal nicely if you follow the proper incision and scar care instructions outlined by Dr. Gartner.

SEROMA

A seroma is a collection of fluid trapped under the skin. While seromas can sometimes resolve on their own, in some cases they need to be surgically drained.

HEMATOMA

A hematoma is a collection of blood trapped under the skin. These also may resolve on their own or require medical intervention.

INFECTION

Dr. Gartner follows strict infection control protocols that minimize the risk of infection. You can also reduce the risk by following the care instructions given to you.

Why Choose Us

Dr. Gartner performs an extensive pre-surgery examination. He carefully examines your medical history and your chest to determine the cause of your abnormal breast enlargement first. By doing this, the safest and most effective treatment is determined for you. There are four treatment options:

If your breasts are primarily comprised of fat, then scarless male breast reduction with liposuction may be more suitable to achieve your expectations. In fact, according to Gynecomastia: analysis of 159 patients and current recommendations for treatment, liposuction alone was deemed sufficient in correcting gynecomastia when caused by excess fat.

If excess glandular tissue and/or sagging skin exists, then excision may be necessary. However, your resulting scars will be well hidden by the natural color and texture of your areola. If both fat and excess glandular tissue and skin exist, then liposuction may be combined with excision techniques.

If your gynecomastia is caused by a current medical issue or medications that you’re taking, then surgery may not be deemed appropriate at all. You may have to resolve these issues first before considering surgery. An evaluation of your areolae will be performed to determine whether they need to be reduced as well. Puffiness and/or their diameter can be decreased to achieve a firmer and more proportionate appearance.

It is important to note that male breast reduction isn’t just for overweight patients. According to Surgical Correction of Gynecomastia in Thin Patients, satisfying results were achieved for patients within a normal weight range.

Expectations

Male breast reduction surgery typically involves the use of local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of correction needed. The scarless surgery involves making tiny incisions in natural creases or the armpit to allow for liposuction and sculpting of the chest. If excess skin and glandular tissue are present, a slightly larger incision around the areola may be necessary for their removal.

The incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures and dressed, and most patients can expect a comfortable recovery with minimal side effects.

The exact procedure may vary depending on your concerns and goals.

Recovery

HOW YOU’LL LOOK WHILE YOU RECOVER

You may notice that your chest is flatter and more toned immediately after surgery. However, you should wait for the optimal results to appear after the swelling and bruising subside. This can be at the three or four-month mark.

You’ll need to wear a compression garment for the first four to six weeks. This will help ease swelling and retract your skin for a more sculpted result.

YOUR RECOVERY EXPLAINED

You will feel some discomfort after the surgery which can be controlled by pain medication. Swelling and bruising are at their peak within the first 48 hours of your surgery but will resolve throughout a couple of months.

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?

If you are a man in good health and have realistic expectations of your recovery and results, then you may be a candidate. You should be at a stable weight and are not planning to lose an excessive amount of weight before you have surgery. Please note that if you are planning to lose a lot of weight after surgery, then your results may be negatively affected

Some medical conditions may contribute to gynecomastia. These include hyperthyroidism and kidney failure. In addition, some medications may also cause excessive male breast growth, such as anabolic steroids, heart medications, and antibiotics. If you suspect any of these, please see your physician before pursuing male breast reduction surgery.

KEEPING CLEAN

You’ll be able to take a shower the day after your surgery. Use mild soap on the incisions as well, and wash thoroughly without rubbing the area. Gently pat dry. This will help the incisions remain clean and reduce the risk of infection. Baths cannot be taken until about two weeks after your surgery. This is also to minimize the risk of infection.

WHEN YOU CAN GO BACK TO WORK

Individual recovery still varies, but most patients can return to work in five to seven days if it is not physically demanding.

WHEN YOU CAN GET BACK TO THE GYM

You should wait for about four to six weeks before going back to the gym. However, you are encouraged to do low-impact cardiovascular activity a day or two after your surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.

YOUR RESULTS

Once the swelling and bruising have subsided, you’ll notice that your chest is firmer and more sculpted. You’ll finally have the flat, toned chest that you’ve always wanted.

YOUR CONSULTATION

In your consultation, you’ll find out about male breast reduction from Dr. Gartner, a Double Board Certified plastic surgeon with over a decade of experience performing the surgery. He’ll examine your chest to determine whether you are suffering from gynecomastia and if your condition can be effectively treated with liposuction, excision, or both. Dr. Gartner will also review your medical history to make sure the surgery is safe for you.

You’ll be able to ask questions and express any concerns you may have during your private medical consultation. After reviewing the risks and side effects related to the surgery, you’ll then be able to decide whether male breast reduction is suitable for you.
