BBL stands for Brazilian Butt Lift, which is a surgical procedure that involves transferring fat from other areas of the body to the buttocks to create a fuller, more lifted appearance.

BBL is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure among women who desire a more curvaceous figure or want to improve the appearance of flat or sagging buttocks. It’s important to note that a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon should only perform the procedure to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of complications. Dr. Gartner is a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience performing BBL procedures and can help you achieve your desired results.

The procedure typically involves three main steps: liposuction to remove fat from other body areas, processing the fat to prepare it for transfer, and injecting the fat into the buttocks in multiple layers to create the desired shape and volume.

Procedure

FIRST BOARD CERTIFIED BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT SURGERY IN NEW JERSEY

Dr. Gartner was the first board-certified plastic surgeon in New Jersey to have performed the Brazilian butt lift, and he was doing it even before the procedure was called that (back then, it was just called autologous fat transfer)! Dr. Gartner has been performing the procedure for over 10 years and during this time, he has refined surgical techniques to make it safer and more effective by doing two things: gently purifying the fat with a handheld centrifuge and using the micro-droplet injection technique. These refinements (similar to those made for fat transfer breast augmentation) improve the longevity of the fat transferred to the buttocks, allowing it to “take” better and making it more durable. This means you’ll be able to have longer-lasting results than other butt lift methods.

THE MICRO-DROPLET TECHNIQUE

Unlike many surgeons, Dr. Gartner applies the micro-droplet technique using small cannulas to spread the fat out in your buttocks. Not only does this allow you to have a fuller and more balanced shape than traditional implants, but it also improves fat longevity. Placing large wads of fat in single areas makes less of it survive. With the micro-droplet technique, the transferred fat develops micro-blood vessels that grow into the fat cells to support their survival for the long term. According to the Method and system for preparing soft tissue for grafting, enhancing grafting results, and grafting autologous fat and adipocyte-derived stem cells to soft tissue such as the breast and other tissue defects[2], *the average survivability of the transferred fat is high*. *Compare that to older techniques of transferring, which only achieve a minimal survivability rate*, according to the study, The neglected free fat graft.

BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT LIMITATIONS

The only limitations placed on the amount of fat you can transfer during your Brazilian butt lift are the amount you have and the amount your butt can accept. You may run out of fat to transfer, so if you are leaner and want a more dramatic result, then Dr. Gartner may advise you to gain some weight before your surgery. The other limitation relies on the amount of fat your buttocks can take.

NATURALLY DISSOLVING SUTURES

Once your cosmetic surgery is finished, dissolvable sutures will be placed to close your incisions. These incisions will measure just a few millimeters and will be located in discreet locations, so they won’t be easily seen. Your sutures will dissolve naturally as you recover, so you won’t have to come back to get them removed.

Surgery Instructions

Dr. Gartner will give you instructions on how to prepare for your Brazilian butt lift. Follow them to make your surgery and recovery smoother. Some things that you may need to do include the following:

  • Don’t take any blood thinners at least two weeks before surgery (e.g. Aspirin).
  • Refrain from smoking for at least two weeks.
  • Create a comfortable environment in your home so that you can spend your time recovering without distractions or stress. You can do things like clean the house, prepare healthy food so you don’t have to cook, arrange for childcare, and fill any prescriptions.
  • You won’t be able to sit on your buttocks after the procedure so make sure you have pillows, blankets, and anything else you’ll need to be comfortable.
  • If you don’t have enough fat in your body to harvest, you may be asked to gain some weight beforehand. However, Dr. Gartner will let you know if you need to do this.
  • After the harvested fat is purified with a handheld centrifuge, small pearl-sized drops are injected into different layers of tissues in the buttocks, but all near a blood supply. The layering method of the micro-droplet technique creates a smooth and rounded buttock that is more even in shape. It also reduces the risk of contour irregularities.
Consult Dr. Gartner

General anesthesia is administered. There are two parts to your procedure: fat removal and injections to your buttocks. First, incisions are made in the donor site from which fat is to be harvested, using standard lipoplasty techniques. These areas are most often the abdomen, waist, and back. The thighs may also be targeted. (We cannot harvest from your breasts, however.) A maximum of five liters of aspirate can be removed in one surgery for the average patient. The incisions are sutured.

Recovery

What’s great about Brazilian butt lift procedures is that you’ll be able to see improvements in your body contour right after your surgery, before swelling and bruising set in. Make sure to follow all of Dr. Gartner’s post-surgery instructions to facilitate your recovery. Wait for about three or four months for the optimal results of your surgery to appear. Maintain your results with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

THE FIRST STAGE OF YOUR RECOVERY

In the first couple of days following surgery, you’ll notice swelling become more prominent, along with bruising and discomfort. These will subside. For the first week, you’ll be asked not to sit at all (except when going to the bathroom).

From the second week to the fifth, you’ll be able to sit but without direct pressure on your buttocks. You can do this by rolling up a swimming noodle in a bath towel and putting it under your thighs, so the majority of the pressure is on your thighs. If you must drive during this time, you can do so for 30-minute stretches.

You’ll wear a compression garment for six weeks following your augmentation. The garment, which we’ll give you, looks like a one-piece bathing suit with the buttocks cut out.

WHEN YOU CAN GO BACK TO WORK

You’ll be able to go back to work in a week, *however you won’t be able to sit for extended periods*. If you work at a desk job that requires you to sit all day, you may need to take a total of six weeks off.

WHEN YOU CAN GET BACK TO THE GYM

After four weeks, you’ll be able to go back to the gym. Take it easy at first so you don’t hurt yourself, as you may be a little out of shape. Don’t worry, though, you’ll be back to your pre-surgery shape (or even better) after a couple of weeks.

It’s important to note that you should refrain from dancing or performing any other activity that shakes your buttocks for at least six weeks to protect the new vessels forming. This includes going on the elliptical machine or jogging.

YOUR RESULTS

After about three or four months, the majority of the swelling will have disappeared, revealing your results. You’ll be leaner in the areas from which the fat was removed and have fuller, perkier buttocks. If your mid-section was a donor site, you’d probably have more of an hourglass figure!

A butt lift Brazilian style is popular for women who want to revamp their body contour. It can be combined with a breast lift, thigh lift, or other procedures to give you the body you want.

Because this removes fat cells from the donor sites, you’ll notice that these areas won’t experience as much expansion with future weight gain. Your buttocks will, however, get larger because of the additional fat cells.

BENEFITS OF BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT

An immediate improvement, with optimal results appearing in a couple of months. A more attractive and proportionate body contour that you won’t be embarrassed to flaunt!

MORE BENEFITS

New Jersey Brazilian Butt Lift patients can add curvy volume where they want it and improve their body shape, dramatically. The benefits of a BBL surgery are so numerous; that it’s easy to see why the demand for this procedure is growing across the US. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the top reasons for choosing this buttocks enhancement.

IMPROVEMENTS TO BODY CONTOURS IN MULTIPLE AREAS

As the name suggests, Brazilian butt lifts in New Jersey are designed to enhance the buttocks, but several other body areas can be reshaped during this procedure too. That’s because a BBL uses liposuction to remove excess fat from wherever it can be found, then transfers that purified fat to your bottom. Fat harvesting sites can include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and even the back of the arms. Though liposuction is a necessary component of the procedure, it’s a valuable bonus for whole-body improvement.

REDUCTION IN THE APPEARANCE OF CELLULITE

The artful injection of fat stem cells on the buttocks, and outer thighs can help to smooth the contours and reduce dents or irregularities.

AVOID RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH MORE INVASIVE IMPLANTS

Because the Brazilian butt lift in New Jersey uses a patient’s own body fat for sculpting, no foreign material is implanted, and no risk of allergy or implant rejection exists. The grafted fat cells are expected to integrate into the patient’s tissues and become a living, natural part of that body area.

NEW JERSEY BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFTS DELIVER NATURAL-FEELING RESULTS

Medical implant devices designed for the buttocks are typically preferred for thin patients who do not have a supply of their fat for grafting. Unfortunately, they also have less “cover” to hide an implant and the aesthetic effect is not always natural.

Likewise, artificial fillers can lead to lumpy, irregular-looking results. If a patient gains or loses weight after butt augmentation through one of these methods, their outcome may change in undesirable ways. A BBL uses real fat deposits to achieve your ideal shape. That means the results not only look smooth and realistic but feel soft and natural to the touch too. Because live fat cells respond to weight fluctuations by increasing or shrinking in size, your BBL result will adapt to your body weight.

YOU CAN SEE RESULTS, FAST

Though outcomes are revealed closer to 6 months post-procedure, Brazilian butt lifts are highly satisfying because of the near-immediate changes patients enjoy. You can see dramatic changes to your shape right after surgery. Plastic surgeons will sometimes inject more fat than ultimately desired because a percentage of it is expected to disappear while healing.

Patients are provided with a snug, shaping garment and will notice a more hourglass shape to their figure following surgery. With care to follow instructions and heal optimally, they can expect to maintain an hourglass shape and curvy bottom, permanently.

Risks

COMPLICATIONS AND RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT

Since the first part of the surgery is harvesting the fat, some of the related side effects and risks are the same as liposuction. Side effects include swelling, bruising, and discomfort. You may also feel nauseous or vomit, which is a side effect of general anesthesia.

In some cases, too much of the fat that has been transferred to the buttocks gets reabsorbed by the body. Generally speaking, any that gets reabsorbed will do so over the three months following surgery. Fat that doesn’t get reabsorbed will remain permanently (barring future weight loss). This will result in insufficient improvement or asymmetry that can be corrected with subsequent surgery.

All of the following risks are rare (and in the rare event they happen, medical attention should be sought immediately):

FAT NECROSIS AND CALCIFICATION

Fat necrosis and calcification: Sometimes, fat transferred to the buttocks dies and forms a calcification. This can be felt as a hard lump or nodule. Patients who smoke or sit on their buttocks too much are at a higher risk of developing necrosis.

MAJOR DISCOMFORT AND PAIN

Major discomfort and pain: This can be caused by a variety of reasons.

INFECTION

Infection: This can affect transferred fat or the incisions. When detected early, it can be well controlled with oral antibiotics. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing an infection.

HEMATOMA OR SEROMA

Hematoma or seroma (a pocket of blood or fluid inside the body): This may go away on its own or require surgical drainage.

IRREGULAR SCARRING

Irregular scarring: Incisions are placed where they won’t be detected easily. However, sometimes the incisions may develop into scars that are raised and dark. This may occur in patients with a history of irregular scarring or if infection at the incision site develops.

FAQ

HOW LONG DOES A BBLL PROCEDURE TAKE?

The length of a BBL procedure can vary depending on the amount of fat transfer and other factors, but typically takes around 2-4 hours to complete.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF A BBL LAST?

The results of a BBL can last for several years or even permanently, as long as the patient maintains a stable weight and follows a healthy lifestyle.

CAN I COMBINE A BBL WITH OTHER COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURES?

Yes, it is possible to combine a BBL with other cosmetic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation. This can be discussed with your plastic surgeon during the initial consultation to determine the best approach for achieving your desired results.

IS THE BBL PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

The BBL procedure itself is performed under anesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the procedure. However, you may experience some discomfort and soreness in the treated areas during the recovery period.

CAN I SIT OR LIE DOWN AFTER A BBL PROCEDURE?

You will need to avoid sitting or lying directly on your buttocks for several weeks after the procedure to allow the transferred fat to settle properly. Your plastic surgeon may provide specific instructions for sitting and sleeping positions during the recovery period.

WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORK AFTER A BBL PROCEDURE?

The length of time you will need to take off work after a BBL procedure can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the nature of your job. Your plastic surgeon can provide specific recommendations for returning to work and resuming other activities after the procedure.

CAN A BBL TREAT ISSUES LIKE CELLULITE AND ASYMMETRY?

Starting with asymmetry a BBL may most certainly help with this issue. An expert and knowledgeable surgeon such as Dr. Gartner will be aware of the proper method to use when carefully injecting fat in a manner that balances out the volume to provide a more proportionate outcome. However, there could be some restrictions on how much rectification is achievable if the asymmetry is severe, although that’s quite uncommon.

Unfortunately, fat grafting cannot lessen the look of cellulite. Some patients may first believe that the procedure has had this effect, but this is often a transitory side effect brought on by postoperative swelling, and after the body has recovered, cellulite will once again resurface. That said, we do offer treatments to help reduce the look of cellulite after the procedure to minimize the look.

CAN A BBL BROADEN MY HIPS AS WELL?

You may discuss this with Dr. Gartner, who will deliberately decide with you where to inject fat into the buttocks to give it the curved shape you want. If you want to enhance the region around your hips, he can let you know if that’s a reasonable expectation given your anatomy and how big of a change he’d be able to create while still maintaining a natural-looking appearance.

The quick answer is that it is feasible to augment the hips. However, it is advisable to discuss this at your appointment so that Dr. Gartner may physically check you to determine if it will work for you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I PUT ON WEIGHT AFTER A BBL?

If you do gain weight following a Brazilian butt lift, it will likely spread throughout your whole body as it would have without the procedure. Although there may be some variations in the distribution, the majority of us acquire weight uniformly across the body.

Brazilian butt lift results are long-lasting, but if you put on weight, your body’s form will undoubtedly alter as your fat cells enlarge. This is a fact of aging as well; our bodies alter as we age and gain weight here and there. Although your body will always be different from how it would have appeared if you had not gotten a BBL to begin with.

So, maintaining your regular healthy diet and exercise routines to keep a stable weight is one strategy to keep the same general appearance you obtained straight after surgery.

WILL I HAVE ANY SCARS AFTER A BBL?

If you do gain weight following a Brazilian butt lift, it will likely spread throughout your whole body as it would have without the procedure. Although there may be some variations in the distribution, the majority of us acquire weight uniformly across the body.

WHERE IS THE FAT HARVESTED FROM FOR A BBL?

The fat for a Brazilian Butt Lift is usually harvested from areas of the body where excess fat is present, such as the abdomen, flanks (love handles), hips, or thighs. These areas are treated with liposuction, allowing the surgeon to sculpt the body while collecting fat for the augmentation of the buttocks.

HOW LONG DOES THE RECOVERY PERIOD TYPICALLY LAST AFTER A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT?

The recovery period after a Brazilian Butt Lift can vary from patient to patient. Generally, patients can expect some swelling and bruising in both the liposuction and buttock areas. You may need to wear a compression garment to support the newly contoured areas and promote healing. Most patients can return to light activities within a week but should avoid sitting or lying directly on the buttocks for several weeks to allow for proper healing.

WILL THE RESULTS OF A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT LOOK NATURAL?

Yes, the results of a Brazilian Butt Lift can look natural when performed by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Gartner. By using your body’s fat, the procedure can enhance the natural shape and curves of your buttocks. The fat is carefully injected to create a balanced and harmonious appearance, resulting in a natural-looking outcome.

CAN I COMBINE A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?

Yes, it is possible to combine a Brazilian Butt Lift with other procedures, depending on your specific goals and medical considerations. Common combination procedures include breast augmentation, tummy tuck, or liposuction in other areas of the body. Combining procedures can provide comprehensive body contouring and help you achieve your desired overall aesthetic outcome. Dr. Gartner will assess your case and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT LAST?

The results of a Brazilian Butt Lift can be long-lasting, but it is important to note that some of the transferred fat may be naturally reabsorbed by the body over time. However, a significant portion of the fat can establish a permanent blood supply and remain in place, providing long-term enhancement. Maintaining a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle can help prolong the results.

To promote a smooth recovery after a Brazilian Butt Lift, it is important to follow your plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully. CAN I SIT OR LIE ON MY BACK AFTER A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT?

To protect the newly transferred fat and ensure optimal results, it is generally advised to avoid sitting or lying directly on your back for a few weeks after a Brazilian Butt Lift. Your plastic surgeon may provide specific instructions on alternative sitting or lying positions to minimize pressure on the buttocks during the initial healing period.

WILL I HAVE VISIBLE SCARS AFTER A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT?

The incisions made for a Brazilian Butt Lift are typically small and strategically placed in discrete locations. As a result, the scars are usually minimal and well-hidden. Over time, the scars will fade and become less noticeable. Following proper scar care instructions provided by your plastic surgeon can help optimize the healing process.

HOW SOON CAN I RETURN TO WORK AND RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITIES AFTER A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT?

The timeline for returning to work and normal activities after a Brazilian Butt Lift will depend on the extent of the procedure and your healing progress. Most patients can typically return to light activities and work within a week, but it is important to avoid vigorous exercise and activities that may put a strain on the buttocks for a few weeks.

HOW CAN I MAINTAIN THE RESULTS OF MY BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT IN THE LONG TERM?

To maintain the results of your Brazilian Butt Lift, it is important to maintain a stable weight and follow a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding significant weight fluctuations can help preserve the enhanced shape and contour of your buttocks. It is also essential to attend follow-up appointments with Dr. Gartner for routine evaluations and personalized guidance on maintaining long-term results.
