Benefits
Buccal fat removal is a procedure that is both safe and successful, and it is recommended for those who either have cheeks that are naturally fuller than average or who just want to make their cheeks seem less plump. The procedure instantly results in the following improvements:
- Reduced fullness in the cheeks,
- Cheeks that are more symmetrical,
- More defined cheeks,
- A more refined transition from cheek to chin also known as the V-line,
- Enhance the look of heart-shaped faces.
Procedure
The wonderful news is that your cheeks, which have just become more defined and thinner, will keep their new appearance permanently. Even if you put on more weight, the fat pads in your cheeks won’t return.
As we age, the natural distribution of fat in our face can change, leading to fuller and rounder cheeks that may make us appear older. While some individuals may appreciate the fullness of their cheeks, others may find it bothersome and desire a more defined and chiseled facial profile. This is where buccal fat reduction can come in as a surgical option for those seeking to enhance the contour of their face.
At Gartner Plastic Surgery in New Jersey, our team is proud to offer this procedure to both men and women who wish to target pesky fat deposits and achieve a more youthful appearance.
Procedure Details
Buccal fat pad removal is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is designed to slim the cheeks and create a more contoured facial appearance. It is also known as cheek reduction surgery or buccal lipectomy.
patients who have fullness and roundness in the lower cheek region and who want to have a slimming impact to increase the definition of the cheek area are suitable candidates for the surgery. both men and women are able to have the surgery done successfully.
The buccal fat pads are pockets of fat located in the cheeks between the facial muscles, bones, and tissues. While these pads provide a youthful appearance in some people, they can give the face a round or chubby appearance in others.
Buccal fat pad removal involves making small incisions inside the mouth and then removing or reducing the size of the buccal fat pads to achieve a more defined facial appearance.
Learn MoreBuccal fat pad removal surgery involves the removal of small pockets of fat located in the cheek area known as the buccal fat pads. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
To begin the procedure, Dr. Gartner will make a small incision inside the mouth, between the cheek and gums, allowing them to access the buccal fat pad. Using specialized surgical tools, the surgeon will then gently remove the desired amount of fat, carefully sculpting the remaining tissue to create a more defined facial contour.
Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, Dr. Gartner will close the incisions with sutures. The patient will be able to return home on the same day as the surgery and can typically resume normal activities within a week or two.
Expectations
after making a tiny incision, dr. gartner locates the regions of extra buccal tissue with extreme precision. to get results that seem completely natural, he works carefully and methodically to trim away the appropriate quantity of fat. in order to have a natural look with clear contours, the quantity of fat that has to be eliminated from a person is determined by their individual anatomy. after that, he closes the little wounds with sutures that dissolve on their own.
After the procedure, most patients can resume their regular activities within 4-5 days. Swelling is expected after surgery, but it gradually subsides over a few days. Sutures placed in the mouth will usually dissolve within a week. That said, a follow-up visit is scheduled with the patient after a week to ensure the recovery is going smoothly.
within 1-2 weeks, the swelling will decrease enough for the results to be visible. over the next 4-6 months, cheek definition will continue to improve.
The Process
Dr. Gartner will numb the cheeks completely by using a local anesthetic that is administered into the mouth, in a manner that is similar to what occurs at a dentist’s office. patients don’t have to have their wounds dressed, and they are able to leave the clinic and go back home within an hour after undergoing surgery.
FAQ
Will The Removal Of The Buccal Fat Leave A Scar?
No, this procedure does not leave behind any visible scars. In order to avoid leaving a noticeable scar, Dr. Gartner performs the procedure by making tiny incisions within the mouth, near the cheeks.
IS GENERAL ANAESTHESIA REQUIRED FOR THE BUCCAL FAT REMOVAL SURGERY?
local anesthetic, which is administered in a manner similar to that used in dental offices, is used for the treatment of buccal fat removal. sedatives are also offered to anybody who wants to take advantage of extra comfort or pain management.
in situations like these, patients are given sedative anesthesia, sometimes known as “twilight anesthesia,” by dr. gartner at the start of the treatment. this will help numb the region that is being worked on as well as keep the patient at ease throughout the procedure.
WHAT AGE IS IDEAL FOR THE REMOVAL OF SUBCUTANEOUS FAT?
patients who are younger and have decent skin quality are often candidates for buccal fat removal surgery. it can also be performed in older patients, typically in conjunction with a facelift, to further enhance the result of facelift surgery by reducing a sagging fat pad and giving more definition to the cheek and jawline. this is done to further improve the appearance of the patient after facelift surgery.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TO REMOVE FAT FROM THE BUCCAL REGION TAKE?
the surgical procedure takes around half an hour to complete, during which time both sides of the patient’s face will be treated. that said, the patient will not experience any discomfort during the procedure.
IS BUCCAL FAT REMOVAL PAINFUL?
when conducted at our New Jersey clinic, the excision of buccal fat does not cause any discomfort, and patients report feeling comfortable both before and after the surgery. only a feeling similar to having a canker sore (also known as an aphthous sore) inside the cheeks is present. any discomfort or pain can be managed with the use of over-the-counter pain medication in the days to follow.
WHAT SHOULD I AVOID AFTER BUCCAL FAT PAD REMOVAL?
the most important thing to remember is to take it easy on the intense exercise and physical activities. due to the fact that the little incisions within the cheeks have the sensation of small ulcers, it is suggested that acidic foods and beverages be avoided. during the healing phase, patients will need to keep the little wounds made within their mouths clean by rinsing their mouths with salt water.
WILL THE REMOVAL OF THE BUCCAL FAT CAUSE ME TO DEVELOP BRUISING?
bruising is quite uncommon after surgery to remove buccal fat. it is possible for there to be a very little bruise on the inside of the mouth near the incision site, but external bruising on the skin is quite uncommon.
DOES FAT EVENTUALLY RETURN TO THE CHEEKS AFTER HAVING THE SURGERY DONE?
to put it simply, no it will not return. after the fat has been trimmed away, it will not come back.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE WEIGHT GAIN AFTER HAVING BUCCAL FAT REMOVED?
because this specific fat pad, known as the fat pad of Bichat, does not change in size in response to changes in body weight, unlike the subcutaneous fat, the effects of your buccal fat removal treatment will not be affected if you later decide to gain weight.
