body liposuction is also referred to as liposculpture or lipoplasty. Liposuction is one of the surgical methods used to remove excess/unwanted amounts of fat cells from body areas where they collect and form stubborn pockets. If you want to remove fat cells that don’t respond to nonsurgical methods such as diet and exercise and change your “homebody”, surgical procedures may be the best way for you to get the body contours you want.

  • It can suck away stubborn fat deposits in several areas of the body, including your breasts (breast reduction), lower abdomen, upper arms, love handles, back, and legs.
  • The subcutaneous fat cells that form a layer under the skin are accessible with cannulas.
  • It’s important to note that your plastic surgeons will not be able to access deep tissue within the abdominal wall, such as visceral fat deposits surrounding organs.
  • That type of weight loss must be achieved through a nonsurgical conventional diet and exercise.
  • Body liposuction is performed to offer a less invasive alternative to plastic surgery without leaving extensive scars.
  • Used as a “spot treatment” MD FACS surgeons do body contouring with careful pockets of fat removal to flatten bulges, reduce gynecomastia (male breasts) slim thighs, double chins, and more.
  • Because each person’s aesthetic goals are diverse, and this treatment can be done all over the body, the planning and pricing vary.
  • Delicate facial smart lipo assists with slimming the profile, and for small areas treated, local anesthetic rather than general is often appropriate.

Procedure

Dr. Gartner is a well-known plastic surgeon who has extensive experience in performing liposuction procedures. Here is a general overview of how liposuction works, including some insights from Dr. Gartner:

  • Anesthesia: Before the procedure begins, the patient will be given either local anesthesia (numbing only the area being treated) or general anesthesia (putting the patient to sleep).
  • Incision: Dr. Gartner will make a small incision in the area where the fat is to be removed.
  • Cannula insertion: A small tube called a cannula will be inserted through the incision. Dr. Gartner will move the cannula back and forth to loosen the fat cells.
  • Fat removal: A suction device connected to the cannula will be used to remove the fat cells from the body. Dr. Gartner will carefully control the amount of fat that is removed to ensure the best possible results.
  • Incision closure: After the fat has been removed, Dr. Gartner will close the incision with sutures

Liposuction is generally considered a safe and effective procedure when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Gartner. However, it is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss solution and should not be used as a substitute for healthy diet and exercise habits.

Recovery

Recovering from liposuction is typically a straightforward and non-surgical process, but it can take a few weeks to fully heal from the procedure. During this time, it is common to experience bruising and swelling.

To prepare for the surgery, there are a few things you can do to ensure a smooth and safe experience. If you have excess fat in certain areas of your body but are generally happy with your overall weight, liposuction can help refine your figure and improve your confidence. You may be advised to wear a compression garment designed to control swelling and help your skin retract.

After the surgery, you will need to avoid strenuous activities, including aerobic exercise, for a few weeks to minimize swelling and reduce the risk of bleeding. Most patients can return to work within a week of their procedure, depending on the extent of the treatment.

It is important to note that immediately after the procedure, you may appear larger than you would like due to fluid retention in the body’s tissues. However, the true results of liposuction will gradually become apparent over the following weeks as your body heals. With patience and proper care, you can achieve your desired shape and feel confident in your silhouette once again.

VARIETY OF LIPOSUCTION TECHNIQUES

Dr. Gartner has over a decade of body contouring experience, and he utilizes a variety of techniques and types of liposuction techniques including laser liposuction and ultrasound-assisted liposuction. For example, laser-assisted liposuction is useful for areas affected by mild to moderate good skin laxity because it helps improve the rate of nonsurgical skin tightening after the procedure. Also, patients experience far less blood loss with laser-assisted liposuction than compared with traditional liposuction.

NUMBING MEDICATION

You can have your surgery under local anesthetic with sedation. General anesthesia is appropriate for the more invasive and lengthy cosmetic surgeries; however, power-assisted liposuction can often be done with strong numbing medication injected into the tissue area, and a sedative to make you drowsy. Power-assisted lipo patients don’t feel any pain during surgery, but they are awake. This way, during power-assisted liposuction they can avoid some of the more unpleasant side effects and risks related to GA.

FAT GRAFTING (FAT TRANSFER)

Dr. Gartner is highly adept in the use of fat grafting (fat transfer) to augment and reshape the buttocks. A Brazilian Butt Lift designed to add volume and accentuate an hourglass shape may combine beautifully with your slimming procedure performed with a fat transfer procedure. Ask Dr. Gartner if your unwanted fat can be used for a Brazilian Butt Lift or to enhance another area such as breast augmentation without breast implants, chin augmentation, breast reduction, tummy tuck surgery breast lift, male breast reduction, neck lift, arm lift, breast lift with augmentation breast reconstruction, lift breast reduction with a fat transfer procedure!

FAQS

ARE SURGICAL GARMENTS NEEDED AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

Surgical garments are commonly worn after many types of cosmetic surgery. They come in different styles but are generally made from highly elastic fabric. After liposuction, most patients will be advised to wear tight compression garments in the form of a girdle and/or leggings. During the first 3 to 6 weeks post-op, gentle, consistent compression is helpful to, 1) reduce bleeding and bruising, 2) reduce swelling faster and, 3) help conform your tissue to its desired shape. For a few weeks, most surgeons will require patients to wear the garments under their clothes at all times, except when showering. They generally hide well and are not uncomfortable.

WHICH BODY AREAS DOES LIPOSUCTION TREAT?

The areas most frequently targeted for liposuction in women are the abdomen, breasts, inner and outer thighs, knees, waist, back of the arms, buttocks, cheeks, chin, and neck. In men, the most common areas include the chin and neck also, along with the flanks (love handles) abdomen, and breast area. Roughly 15-20% of New York City liposuction patients are men.

WHAT’S THE SAFEST METHOD OF LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction can be performed in a private outpatient surgical facility or a hospital. Liposuction can be minimally invasive and offers fast recovery, but it is a surgical procedure, requiring high surgical safety standards. Tumescent liposuction in NYC is the safest type of liposuction. Liposuction is done using general anesthesia or local and IV sedation. The choice of either option depends on your surgeon and the extent of your surgery. For smaller areas, IV sedation, which keeps the patient awake, is quite common. Whenever appropriate, local anesthesia is generally considered safer. Microcannulas also permit smoother results, and less tissue trauma and bruising. A liposuction cannula is a small tube inserted through a tiny incision to remove subcutaneous fat.

DOES LIPOSUCTION AFFECT THE SKIN’S APPEARANCE?

Many patients want to know if liposuction will cause scars or unwanted changes to the skin. Your skin elasticity and firmness will contribute to the results. Toned, elastic skin tends to create smooth, even results. However, for those who have stretched, thinning, or sagging skin, the result can appear unsatisfactory after removing underlying fat. Your surgeon will examine you to determine if you’re a good candidate for liposuction. Scars resulting from modern liposuction are typically tiny and placed in natural creases or well-hidden areas. Once healed, they should be nearly invisible.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIPOSUCTION AND A TUMMY TUCK?

Abdominoplasty is the medical term for a tummy tuck, and it is significantly more invasive than mere fat reduction. Tummy tucks remove skin and other tissue to smooth and reshape the abdomen. Muscle repair and reconstructing the navel is also possible. Tummy tucks may include liposuction as part of the body contouring process. Liposuction removes fat only, not sagging skin. It leaves much smaller scars and is ideal for spot treatment.

HOW IS LIPOSUCTION DONE?

Dr. Gartner administers pre-emptive anesthesia just before surgery. Local anesthetic with oral sedation or general anesthesia is administered. One or more tiny incisions measuring just a few millimeters will be made in the target areas. These can usually be well hidden in natural creases or below underwear lines. A special infiltration fluid that aids the process and limits bleeding may be added to the area. A blunt-tipped cannula (suction device) will then be inserted through the incision to remove fat, using a back-and-forth motion. After fat removal / fat transfer once desired pockets of fat are removed, incisions will be stitched shut and covered with protective tape. Patients can recover comfortably with a nurse at their side.

ARE YOU WITHIN 30% OF YOUR IDEAL WEIGHT?

That will often mean 20-25 lbs of weight loss within your goals. Those who are at or near an ideal BMI (body mass index) will have more satisfying liposuction results. The liposuction procedure is designed to sculpt and treat problem areas, it was not designed to provide significant weight loss and size reduction.

DO YOU HAVE FIRM, ELASTIC SKIN?

Those with tight, healthy skin tones tend to see more satisfying outcomes than those who have thin, stretched, or sagging skin. If you experience skin laxity after significant weight loss, your plastic surgeon dr may recommend additional body lifting surgeries to achieve your goals (male breast reduction,  thigh lift, lower body lift, brow lift chin, lift breast reduction, arm lift, tummy tuck, brow lift chin, eyelid surgery, mommy makeover, augmentation breast reconstruction with implant revision breast lift).

ARE YOU IN GOOD, OVERALL HEALTH?

Ideal candidates in New York City don’t have diabetes, immune disorders, heart disease, lung disease, or any other illness that could impair the healing process.

DO YOU HAVE A FIT, HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?

Your surgeon dr will likely advise you to avoid smoking cigarettes and to watch your calorie intake post-procedure. They’ll want to ensure you don’t put on excess fat and that your tissue has optimal blood flow while healing. It’s essential to let your plastic surgeon know so they can make recommendations.

DO YOU HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS FOR LIPOSUCTION?

The liposuction procedure combined with other procedures can deliver natural-looking and transformative results. Choosing a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon is your first step. You can expect improvements and better proportions, but no body contouring procedure can completely change your shape or guarantee happiness. The most satisfied patients are seeking improvements to their figure, along with a healthy lifestyle and mindset.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM LIPOSUCTION?

Recovery times can vary depending on the extent of the procedure, but most patients can return to work within a week and resume normal activities within a few weeks. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions for the best results.

WILL LIPOSUCTION HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT?

Liposuction is not a weight loss solution, but it can help contour and reshape areas of the body where excess fat has accumulated. The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who is already at or near their target weight and has specific areas of concern.

IS LIPOSUCTION A PAINFUL PROCEDURE?

Patients may experience discomfort and mild pain during the recovery process, but the procedure itself is typically performed under anesthesia, which reduces any pain or discomfort. Your surgeon can also provide pain management options to help you feel more comfortable during the recovery period.

WHAT AREAS OF THE BODY CAN BE TREATED WITH LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction can be performed on various areas of the body, including the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, back, and neck. It can also be used to address concerns such as love handles, double chin, and bra fat. That said, Dr. Gartner will assess your specific concerns and determine the areas that can be effectively treated with liposuction.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIPOSUCTION TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE?

Yes, there are different types of liposuction techniques available. Traditional liposuction involves the use of a cannula and suction to remove fat. Other techniques include tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), and laser-assisted liposuction (LAL). Each technique has its advantages and considerations, and Dr. Gartner will recommend the most suitable option based on your needs.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE THE FINAL RESULTS OF LIPOSUCTION?

The final results of liposuction are typically seen after the swelling subsides and the body has healed completely, which may take several weeks to a few months. However, you will notice an immediate improvement in the contours of the treated areas once the initial swelling goes down.

CAN LIPOSUCTION BE USED TO REMOVE CELLULITE?

Liposuction is not specifically designed to remove cellulite. While it can improve the overall appearance of the treated area, it may not eliminate cellulite entirely. However, certain techniques such as laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) may help to improve the appearance of cellulite to some extent.

ARE THERE ANY NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVES TO LIPOSUCTION?

Yes, there are non-surgical alternatives to liposuction that can help reduce fat and contour the body. These include procedures such as cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting), radiofrequency treatments, and injectable fat-dissolving solutions. However, it is important to note that non-surgical alternatives may not provide the same level of results as liposuction and are typically more suitable for mild fat reduction and body contouring.

WHAT FACTORS CAN AFFECT THE COST OF LIPOSUCTION?

The cost of liposuction can vary based on several factors, including the extent of the procedure, the number of areas treated, the surgeon’s experience, the geographic location of the practice, and any additional fees such as anesthesia and facility charges. It is important to have a detailed consultation with Dr. Gartner to receive an accurate cost estimate based on your specific case.

CAN LIPOSUCTION HELP WITH LOOSE OR SAGGING SKIN?

Liposuction primarily targets excess fat deposits and may not effectively address loose or sagging skin. However, in some cases, liposuction combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or body lift can provide comprehensive body contouring and address both excess fat and loose skin. That said, Dr. Gartner will assess your concerns and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

The recovery period after liposuction varies depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing factors. Generally, you can expect to take a few days to a week off work and limit physical activities for a few weeks. You may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort during the initial stages of recovery. Your plastic surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions to help manage your recovery and ensure optimal healing.

ARE THERE ANY DIETARY OR LIFESTYLE CHANGES I NEED TO MAKE BEFORE OR AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

Dr. Gartner may provide specific dietary and lifestyle recommendations before and after liposuction to optimize your results and ensure a smooth recovery. This may include maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, avoiding certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding, and gradually resuming physical activities as advised by your surgeon.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH LIPOSUCTION?

Like any surgical procedure, liposuction carries potential risks and complications. These can include infection, bleeding, fluid accumulation, changes in sensation, scarring, contour irregularities, and unfavorable aesthetic results. It is important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Gartner with extensive experience in liposuction to minimize these risks and ensure your safety.

WILL LIPOSUCTION LEAVE VISIBLE SCARS?

The incisions made during liposuction are typically small and strategically placed to minimize the visibility of scars. Over time, the scars will fade and become less noticeable. Your plastic surgeon will guide scar management techniques to help optimize healing and minimize the appearance of scars.

CAN LIPOSUCTION HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

Liposuction is not intended as a weight loss method. It is best suited for individuals who are close to their ideal weight but have stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can provide body contouring and improve the proportions of your body, but it is not a substitute for weight loss through a healthy lifestyle.

CAN LIPOSUCTION BE COMBINED WITH OTHER COSMETIC PROCEDURES?

Yes, liposuction can be combined with other cosmetic procedures to achieve comprehensive body contouring and enhance overall results. Common combinations include liposuction with breast augmentation, tummy tuck, or thigh lift, among others. Combining procedures can help address multiple concerns in a single surgical session, reducing overall downtime and providing more significant transformation.
