About Breast Augmentation in New York
In 2022, approximately 300,000 patients in the United States received breast augmentations, making it one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries. (1) Breast augmentation can restore volume that may have been lost over time or enhance the size of naturally small breasts to achieve a fuller and more proportionate breast appearance.
Dr. Gartner provides several augmentation options to help you achieve your dream figure. This customizable procedure is very personal because everyone has a different perception of beauty. Dr. Gartner will work with you to help you decide how to achieve the results you are looking for.
Breast Implants
If you are considering breast augmentation, one of the most common ways to achieve a bigger bust size is with breast implants. Dr. Gartner will help you choose the type of implants you need. Although all implants have a silicone lining, the two most common types are silicone-filled or saline-filled. (2)
Silicone implants contain a cohesive silicone gel filling within a silicone shell. The modern generation of silicone implants provides a more natural texture and consistency, closely resembling the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are often preferred by patients due to their ability to create a more realistic breast appearance. Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater (saline). These implants can be inserted using smaller incisions compared to silicone implants since they are filled after placement. Saline implants offer flexibility in adjusting the implant volume during surgery to achieve optimal symmetry. In the rare event of an implant leak or rupture, saline is harmlessly absorbed by the body.
Fat Transfer
During a fat transfer, Dr. Gartner will use liposuction to extract fat from your thighs, hips or abdomen. He will purify the fat and inject it into your breasts. This natural form of breast augmentation can be performed with or without implants and requires minimal recovery time. If you do not have enough fat to harvest for the procedure, implants will be the best option.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
- Enhanced Bustline and Improved Body Proportions: Breast augmentation can help balance your figure by increasing breast size and projection.
- Boost in Confidence and Self-Esteem: Many women experience increased self-confidence and improved body image after achieving their desired breast size.
- Restoring Volume After Pregnancy or Weight Loss: Pregnancy and weight loss can lead to changes in breast volume and shape. Breast augmentation can restore lost volume and improve breast appearance.
- Correcting Asymmetry: Breast augmentation can achieve better symmetry in breasts, balancing differences in size, shape, or positioning.
Candidates
Candidates for breast augmentation are women who:
- Desire fuller or larger breasts
- Have naturally smaller breasts
- Experience loss of breast volume due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
- Desire improved breast symmetry
- Have realistic expectations and understand the potential risks and limitations of the procedure
- Are physically healthy and do not have any underlying medical conditions that may impair healing or increase risks during surgery
- Do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking before and after surgery, as smoking can compromise healing
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Gartner will discuss your medical history and expectations for the procedure. He will help you decide whether you need general or local anesthesia. Depending on your medical history, he might recommend the awake breast augmentation procedure, a cutting-edge surgery that will have you in and out of the office in about an hour. This is ideal for patients who want to avoid the side effects of general anesthesia or do not want to deal with an extended recovery time.
Preparation
To prepare for your breast augmentation, you will need to arrange for a trusted adult to take you home and monitor you for the first few days after your procedure. Arrive at the office in comfortable clothes, and prepare to dress comfortably for the first few weeks after your procedure. If you usually wear tight-fitting clothing, you might need to purchase some loose, comfortable clothes for your recovery. You will need to stop taking blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAIDs) and drinking alcohol to prepare for your appointment.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
During your breast augmentation, we will place you under general or local anesthesia depending on the type of procedure you have. The most common incision options are inframammary (made under the breast within the natural breast crease), periareolar (around the edge of the areola), or transaxillary (within the armpit). Your breast augmentation procedure will be tailored to suit your unique needs and goals, ensuring the best possible aesthetic outcome.
Recovery
After a breast augmentation procedure, you may experience discomfort for several weeks while your body heals. Swelling and bruising are normal and will gradually subside over time. Most patients can resume light activities within a few days and return to work within a week, depending on individual healing rates. You will receive a compression garment and will need to be careful about the type of bra you wear. Avoid strenuous physical activities, including heavy lifting and intense gym workouts, for several weeks. We will schedule follow-up appointments so that Dr. Gartner can assess your progress and address any concerns or questions you may have during the recovery period.
Breast Augmentation Results
After a breast augmentation, you can enjoy your new beautiful voluptuous breasts. You will no longer have to worry about uneven breasts making your clothes uncomfortable and you will love the natural look and feel of your new body. The results of a breast augmentation procedure are also long-lasting. You will not have to return to the office for new implants for several years, so you can focus on enjoying your new contour. If you decide to increase your breast size later on, we can help you make adjustments as needed.
Corresponding Procedures
Breast Lift
Although a breast augmentation procedure can increase the size of your breasts, it cannot correct drooping breasts or significant sagging. If your breasts noticeably sag, you will likely need a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy. There are many types of incision options for a breast lift, and Dr. Gartner will choose the right one depending on your unique anatomy and degree of breast sagging.
Breast Revision
If you received implants in the past and are unhappy with your results, a breast revision procedure can correct mistakes. If your implant is ruptured or needs to be changed for another reason like rippling or capsular contracture, we will place a new implant to have you looking and feeling back to your old self.
Mommy Makeover
A mommy makeover is a highly customizable procedure that reduces excess fat and skin after pregnancy and is the perfect addition to breast augmentation surgery. Pregnancy can lead to sagging breasts and lost volume. If you have a mommy makeover, Dr. Gartner can contour the abdomen with a tummy tuck or liposuction, lift the breasts, and increase your breast volume to help you get your old body back. FAQ
How long does breast augmentation surgery take?
The duration of breast augmentation surgery can vary depending on individual circumstances, such as the complexity of the procedure, the implant type, and the incision technique. On average, the surgery takes approximately one to two hours.
What type of anesthesia is used for breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. However, depending on your specific case, other anesthesia options, such as an awake procedure, may be suitable for your needs.
Do breast implants affect breastfeeding?
In most cases, breast implants do not typically interfere with breastfeeding. The placement of implants behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle helps to preserve normal breastfeeding functions. However, it is essential to discuss your plans for breastfeeding with your surgeon during the consultation to ensure that appropriate incision and pocket placement techniques are chosen.
Can breast augmentation correct sagging breasts?
Breast augmentation alone is not specifically designed to correct significantly sagging breasts. If you have significant breast sagging, a breast lift procedure (mastopexy) may be recommended in combination with breast augmentation to achieve the desired results.
