Dr. Gartner may ask you to discontinue the use of certain medications ahead of time, such as blood thinners, to help ensure a smooth recovery. Patients who smoke should be prepared to temporarily quit smoking leading up to the procedure, and continue to refrain from smoking throughout recovery.
Procedure
This procedure is most commonly done under local anesthesia. Dr. Gartner uses a numbing cream that ensures that the injections are pain-free afterward.
After the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Gartner will remove the excess tissue and reshape the labia to the patient’s preference. The procedure itself can take anywhere between 1-2 hours, with the patient being released home the same day. Multiple methods can be used to help achieve your ideal aesthetic. No matter what condition you’re looking to treat, Dr. Gartner will use the most effective methods and strategies to help you look and feel your best.
The Trim Technique
The trim technique is one of the types of procedure methods that Dr. Gartner can use to minimize the size and adjust the shape of the labia. During this technique, Dr. Gartner will remove excess tissue from the edges of the labia. This method will create a more uniform edge along the labia that may appear less natural than the results of the wedge technique.
The Wedge Method
The wedge method is another method used in a labiaplasty procedure to help enhance the look and minimize discomfort caused by the labia minora. This technique effectively preserves the natural outer edges of the labia by removing a wedge-shaped portion of tissue from the center of the vaginal lips.
Recovery and Results
It is important to follow all recovery instructions provided to you by Dr. Gartner to ensure an optimal recovery. Patients may experience swelling and bruising at the treatment site and should avoid sitting for prolonged periods. Patients can manage these effects through the use of medication as advised by Dr. Gartner. After 2-4 weeks, most of these effects will subside as the body continues to heal.
During recovery, patients should avoid any activities that lead to tension in the incisions.
Sexual activity and the use of tampons should be avoided for 4-6 weeks after the procedure, or until Dr. Gartner approves. The full results should be visible 6-8 weeks after the procedure, once the treatment site is more fully healed.

FAQ
What is labiaplasty?
A labiaplasty is a procedure aimed to remove excess skin from the labia and reshape its appearance. If sagging or overly large, the labia minora–also known as the vaginal lips–can cause discomfort and chafing for patients. Large or sagging labia can also impact one’s confidence, as they can cause visible bulging beneath tight-fitting clothes or bathing suits. They can also cause self-consciousness and discomfort during intimacy. By removing excess tissue from the labia, a labiaplasty can help improve both aesthetics and comfort.
Is a labiaplasty painful?
It is normal for patients to experience swelling and discomfort after a labiaplasty procedure. However, your surgeon may prescribe pain medications to enhance your comfort.
How long does the recovery period after a labiaplasty last?
A full recovery after labiaplasty can take anywhere from 6-8 weeks or longer. However, many patients find that they can return to light activities within a few days, with the approval of their surgeon and care team. Strenuous exercise and intercourse should be avoided until your surgeon determines that the treated areas have healed sufficiently.
How is a labiaplasty performed?
There are two common methods for labiaplasty: the trim method and the wedge method. The trim method primarily removes excess tissue from along the edges of the labia. Meanwhile, the wedge method removes a v-shaped section from the center of the vaginal lips.
What technique is best for labiaplasty?
This depends on your situation and your personal goals. During a personal consultation, your surgeon can help you determine which method for labiaplasty would be most effective for you. The trim technique is typically best for patients who are looking to address the edge of the labia, as it will remove this tissue. The wedge technique, however, preserves the natural edges of the labia, which is beneficial for patients who are hoping to achieve results with a more natural look.
Will a labiaplasty leave scarring?
Surgical labiaplasty requires that incisions be made to remove the excess tissue and adjust the appearance of the labia. However, your surgeon will take great care to minimize scarring and place incisions in discreet locations.
Can a labiaplasty be combined with other procedures?
Yes, the labiaplasty can be combined with additional procedures. For example, a labiaplasty can be included in a mommy makeover, which is a set of procedures designed to rejuvenate the body after pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are interested in incorporating other procedures into your appointment, ask your surgeon during your consultation.
