Procedure
Mole and lipoma removal are medical procedures that we offer to remove benign growths from the skin. A mole is a dark spot or a cluster of pigmented cells that can appear anywhere on the skin. A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump that grows under the skin.
While moles and lipomas are usually harmless, they can be aesthetically displeasing or cause discomfort when they grow or rub against clothing. In some cases, they may also pose a risk of developing skin cancer or other health problems. For that reason, we offer removal treatments to both women and men looking to remove them altogether.
Learn MoreIdeal Candidate
Some things that make you a suitable candidate for the treatment include the following:
- You understand the risks related to the procedure.
- You are relatively healthy, physically and psychologically.
- You have realistic expectations of surgical outcomes.
- You will follow the pre and post-treatment care instructions that Dr. Gartner gives you. These are designed to make your experience a safer one and facilitate your recovery process.
Mole and lipoma removal typically involves excision, which means surgically cutting the growth out of the skin. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and the removed growth is sent to a lab for analysis. Dr. Gartner is very careful to apply precise full-thickness excision techniques to remove your entire mole or lipoma, suturing meticulously to close the site. This allows for minimal scarring.
Mole and lipoma removal treatment is suitable for men and women who dislike the appearance of these blemishes, or are concerned about their presence and want to make sure they aren’t a health risk.
Depending on the size and location of the mole or lipoma, other techniques such as laser removal may also be used.
After the removal, the area is typically covered with a bandage, and the patient is advised to avoid strenuous activity and exposure to sunlight for a period to allow the skin to heal.
Risks
INFECTION
Infection may occur, causing redness, inflammation, discomfort and discharge. Following post-treatment care instructions will minimize your risk of developing an infection. If you develop an infection, please contact us as soon as possible as it can be resolved with prescribed antibiotics.
IRREGULAR SCARRING
Because the treatment involves excision, you’ll develop a scar. Most scars heal into a thin, fine line that is barely noticeable. However, if you have a history of irregular scarring and keloids, then you may be left with a noticeable scar that is more pronounced in appearance and texture. In the rare event this occurs, talk to Dr. Gartner about an effective scar treatment.
MOLES AND LIPOMAS THAT GROW BACK
Sometimes, moles and lipomas can grow back. If this occurs, the treatment can be performed again.

To minimize scarring, we recommend avoiding the use of darkly pigmented makeup, self-tanners, and bronzers on your scars, as these can permanently darken the area. It’s also best to avoid sun exposure to the treated areas for at least a year for the same reason.
Fortunately, there is no downtime after the treatment, allowing you to return to work and daily activities right away. While you may experience some discomfort, Tylenol can easily alleviate this.
