Why your photofacial rejuvenation treatment at Gartner Plastic Surgery is unique

  • Your treatment is performed with technology that has been scientifically proven to do three things: repair damage, increase collagen and elastin production and improve the appearance of photo damaged skin[1]. These benefits were shown to be maintained even after three months following the last session, proving that our technology enables you to achieve healthier, more resilient skin over a longer period of time.
  • Prior to your treatment, you’ll have an extensive skin assessment to make sure that photofacial rejuvenation will achieve the improvement you want. Your assessment is conducted by a medical aesthetician under the direct supervision of Dr. Gartner, a double board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic treatments of the face and body. If photofacial rejuvenation isn’t right for you, an alternative treatment may be recommended that would be more effective for you.
  • Your medical aesthetician will design a customized treatment plan to complement your photofacial rejuvenation treatment. This may include a list of suitable skincare products that you can use at home and other treatments performed at our center to keep your skin beautiful.

Are you a candidate?

Photofacial rejuvenation is designed for men and women who are unhappy with the visible state of their skin on their face, neck, chest and hands due to damage caused by excessive sun exposure. It is suitable for all skin types.

There are certain medical conditions that may make this treatment unsafe for you. If you have Lupus, a history of irregular scarring or are hypersensitive to light, then you may not be a suitable candidate.

Your Consultation

Before your treatment, you’ll speak to one of our experienced medical aestheticians about your skin concerns. You should be honest and upfront about your concerns, so they can get a better idea of what you’d like to improve. Your skin will be examined and a brief overview of your medical history may also be explored to ensure that the treatment is safe for you. An alternative or complementary treatment may be recommended as well.

A patch test may be performed to see how your skin reacts to the treatment.

However, the only way to really know if you’re a suitable candidate for surgery is by talking to Dr. Gartner during your private medical consultation.

Why you should protect your skin from the sun

A study published in the journal, Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, suggests that 80% of the visible signs of aging on your face (ie. wrinkles, pigmentation problems, broken capillaries) are caused by long term UV exposure[2]! In addition, the study found that those who worshipped the sun looked a few years older than their biological age because of the worse state of their skin.

It’s not too late for you to reverse the signs of photodamage. Photofacial rejuvenation will resolve the blemishes and irregular textures caused by years of UV exposure, and you can start protecting your skin from now on by making it a habit to stay out of the sun and apply a minimum SPF35 sunscreen whenever you go out. Do this and your skin will reward you by being healthier and more youthful!

How to prepare for your treatment

The best way to prepare for your treatment is to keep your skin healthy and protected from the sun. If you have recently tanned, have an infection or your skin’s integrity has been compromised in the area you’d like to target, then your treatment may be postponed until these have resolved. This is because the risk of developing complications, such as burns or scarring, is higher.

Your treatment

  • The skin in the target area will be cleaned.
  • A numbing cream may be applied beforehand to increase your comfort.
  • A gel is applied to the target area(s). This gel helps to cool the skin during your treatment.
  • A handpiece emits therapeutic light energy as it passes over your skin in the target area(s). This may feel like a rubber band gently snapping against your skin. It is generally well tolerated by our patients.

Once your session is finished, the gel is removed and your skin cleansed. Moisturizing cream is applied, along with sunscreen, then you’re free to go.

Your Recovery

Congratulations, within a few months you’ll be able to see the results of your photofacial rejuvenation procedure! All you have to do is to follow the post-surgery care instructions provided to you by Dr. Gartner and wait for your breasts to settle.

Your Recovery

The area(s) treated will probably feel a little sensitive for a few days. Redness is common, and you may also experience some mild bruising, swelling and blistering. These side effects usually go away in a few days, although in some cases it can last for up to two weeks or so.

As you progress in your recovery, you may notice that your skin becomes flaky or crusty. It’s important not to pick at your skin as this occurs and to let this resolve on its own, which is usually in about a week or two. Be very gentle when bathing and washing your face, using only warm water rather than hot. Make sure to keep your skin well protected from the sun for the extent of your treatment regimen.

Once the side effects of your treatment disappear, you’ll find your skin to be smoother, more even toned and more youthful in appearance. This usually takes about two weeks or so. The results of your treatment can be maintained by following your customized skincare treatment plan, as designed by your medical esthetician.
