Will Breast Implants Sag?

Breast Augmentation With Implants

Breast, “ptosis” is a term that refers to the sagging of the breast due to the downward pull of gravity and stretching of breast skin.

With advancing age, gravity eventually drags down structures such as the breasts and buttocks resulting in significant changes in the physical appearance. This phenomenon can occur in women with natural breasts as well as those with surgical breast implants. Even women with small breasts can be affected by breast sagging, depending on their tissue elasticity.

Under the influence of gravity, larger than normal sized breasts, with or without implants, will experience greater sagging. During your consultation, ask your surgeon for details about the implant size appropriate for your situation. You will be able to try on the breast implants underneath your t-shirt to get a preview of the size of your breasts following the breast augmentation procedure.

The weight of the breast implants can vary significantly depending on the size that you choose. For a large implant, you must have sufficient structural support from the breast tissue to prevent it from falling down over time under the influence of gravity. Always remember, “the bigger they are, the harder they fall.” If your breast tissue has been stretched dramatically in the past and if you have had a breast lift, your elasticity and tissue strength may not be adequate to hold heavy breast implants in a perky position.

If you are physically active and participate in activities such as running or long-distance walking, your movements will expose your implants to the forces of the gravity. Shifting of heavy breasts during exercise can be uncomfortable and lead to back or neck pain as well.

As we age, there will be a significant reduction in the elasticity of our skin. It is believed that this could be contributed to the increase in the levels of the collagenase enzyme with age. The enzyme functions by breaking down the collagen found in the connective tissue of the breast. As a precaution, it is common for surgeons to assess the ability of the breast tissue to provide support for the implants if the client is more than 30 years old. Fortunately, additional support can be provided by wearing special bras. Personal habits such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption are believed to accelerate the effects of aging by causing the deficiency of vitamin C which is necessary for the synthesis of collagen in humans.

Tips to Achieve Good Long-Term Result

Plan ahead: Anticipate what is going to happen in the future if you choose large implants and whether you would be comfortable with them 20 or even 30 years down the road.

If you become pregnant and the breasts grow- be sure to support them well.

Wear a surgical bra for additional support to achieve the desired results. Avoiding going bra-less.

Be realistic in what you would like from the surgery. Undergoing cosmetic procedures to develop unnatural sized breasts can cause complications later on.

Consider your desired long-term look and if your breast skin has already been stretched, or if you have thin skin and little breast tissue, selecting moderate sized implants will be more likely to maintain a perky position for you.
