Textured vs. Smooth Implants for Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation With Implants

So, you’ve decided that breast augmentation might be right for you!
– Now what?

One of the first things to consider as you begin this process is choosing the texture of breast implant you want. There are two main types: smooth implants and textured implants. It’s an important decision, as the one you choose may affect how your augmented breasts look and feel.

Read on if you’re wondering whether smooth or textured breast implants are the right fit for you. Keep in mind that every patient is unique. There are pros to both implant surface types. Your selection will ultimately depend on what feels right for you.

Smooth Breast Implants

If you want to keep a natural feel, smooth implants could be just what you’re looking for. Smooth implants (also called round implants) get their name from the smooth shell encasing the implant contents. Their outer layer is thinner, which makes them softer to the touch than textured implants. They also move freely within the implant pocket during exercise and direct manipulation, adding to their
realistic nature.

It’s possible for implants with a non-textured surface to show rippling or shift in position over time, but this has more to do with how thin a person’s breast tissue and skin are. Someone with less natural breast tissue may be more likely to see ripples in their implants.

Textured implants

Textured devices have a rougher shell surface than smooth ones. This texturing is what helps them stay just where you want them to. Textured breast implants typically have a firmer feel and don’t move from side to side as the body moves.

Smooth implants are always round, but textured implants can be round or anatomically-shaped ( also known as tear-drop shaped. )

Two things to note

– Textured, round implants adhere to the underside of tissue so they may show folds more easily.

– All tear-drop implants need to be textured so they can remain in their precise position. Some medical conditions will make textured implants necessary. For example: if you have a condition which causes your breastbone to be more concave, a smooth implant might slip out of place.

Feel free to research and ask questions

Will I choose round or tear-drop? What size? Where will the incisions be? These are just a few options you might consider leading up to your consultation. Often, the choice of implant surface is left to the surgeon, but you can ask questions about their recommendation for you and be involved in the planning. Women who report feeling the most satisfied after breast augmentation are often those who
get involved with the whole process.
