Instructions For Care After Your Breast Augmentation Procedure?

Breast Augmentation With Implants

Prior to undergoing a breast augmentation, it is important to be aware of the recovery care required. Each surgeon has their own protocols but the following instructions are common after breast augmentation. In order to ensure optimal results and a speedy recovery, it is crucial to carefully follow all instructions provided by your surgeon. Below is a list of the dos and don’ts following a breast augmentation.

Do

  • Allow yourself time to rest in order to provide your body with time to heal.
  • Sleep on your back to avoid applying pressure on your chest. Sleeping in a semi-reclined positioned is ideal as keeping head and shoulders slightly elevated will help reduce swelling.
  • Eat a healthy, nutritious diet. While there are no limitations on the food you can consume following your procedure, it is advisable to stick to a healthy diet so you consume the necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to help your body heal.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking prescribed pain medications.
  • Drink plenty of fluids such as water, to ensure you keep hydrated and help your body heal.
  • Listen to your body when determining when you can resume normal day-to-day activities. In most instances, you can return to non-strenuous work within one week, but it is crucial not to push yourself too much.
  • Wear compression garments or recommended bra for as long as instructed in order to minimize swelling.
  • Only lift objects up to 5 lb during the first two weeks following your surgery.
  • Lift your arms only up to your shoulder height during the first two weeks after your procedure.
  • Massage your breasts as recommended by your surgeon.

Don’t

  • Sleep on your stomach for at least six weeks following your procedure.
  • Lift your arms above your shoulders for at least two weeks. Avoid wearing shirts that require you to lift your arms over your head and be careful when washing your hair.
  • Leave your surgical bra or compression garment off other than when washing until your surgeon has given you approval to do so.
  • Bath, swim or soak your incisions -just showers after the first 2 days. You must pat the incisions fully dry afterwards or use a low heat blow drier. Incisions will no longer be at risk of infections in water once completely closed, around 2 weeks post op.
  • Exercise the upper body for the first six weeks following your surgery as strenuous physical activities such as jumping, weight-lifting and push-ups can impact the results of the procedure.
  • Wear an underwire or push up bra for a minimum of six weeks after your surgery as your implants need time to settle and incisions to heal.
  • Smoke as it hinders circulation.
  • Drive for at least 24 hours following your procedure or as long as you are taking pain medication.
  • Try to examine your scars by pulling on your breasts or lifting your arms as this may open your incision, hindering healing.

While some of these restrictions may be difficult to follow, you must follow all after care instructions your surgeon gives you because they know what conditions will ensure optimal results and avoid complications. During your consultation, Dr. Michael Gartner, a double board-certified New York surgeon, will provide more details about what you can expect during the recovery period and will answer any questions that you may have.
