Do You Get Back Pain With Large Breast Implants?

Breast Augmentation With Implants

According to most plastic surgeons, one of the most common concerns that their clients have regarding the breast augmentation procedures is whether large breast implants can increase their risk of experiencing back pain.

At Gartner Plastic Surgery and Laser Center, we identified that large breasts are not the most common cause of back pain among our client base. In fact, most women associated their back pain to pre-existing injuries, pregnancy or medical conditions such as a weakened spine due to inflammatory conditions or osteoporosis.

If we notice any signs of these medical conditions among our clients, we will provide a referral to the appropriate health care provider for further assessments before beginning to plan the breast augmentation procedure. Women with hunched shoulders commonly present with severe pressure on their vertebrae and muscles in the upper back region between the margins of their shoulders. This can often be misinterpreted by patients to be caused by the large size of their breasts.

Our clinical staff will evaluate each client thoroughly during the consultations to find the appropriately sized implants to achieve a proportionate appearance. Following the surgery, the spine and muscles of the upper back region will take time to adjust to the additional stress.

Patients undergoing breast augmentation surgeries with larger than normal sized implants may expect some back pain following the procedure due to the added weight of the implants. The effect of gravity on extremely large implants can alter the contour and appearance of the surrounding breast tissue.

In most cases, there will be discomfort for a few weeks following the surgery, but these sensations will continue to improve as the body adjusts to the new changes. Patients often report back or neck pain immediately after surgery and this is due to tension in the muscles which are flexed reflexively, or poor posture as the head and neck are elevated on pillows while resting. Once normal mobility and relaxation is restored the back pain can be expected to resolve.

If you suffer from back pain and would like to improve the look of your breasts but not to increase their size or weight at all, you may find that a breast lift might be a better option for you. The breast lift will provide a fuller appearance to your breast, reposition nipples and remove excess skin. The procedure will elevate the breast higher up on the chest wall to provide a fuller appearance without increasing the cup size.
