The Different Types Of Breast Surgery
Breast Augmentation With Implants
Many women consider their breasts to be an important symbol of their femininity and beauty.
They can also be a source of frustration, pain or embarrassment. It is no wonder that cosmetic breast procedures are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. The improvement in confidence and self-esteem seen in some women following breast surgery can greatly improve quality of life in many ways.
Breast Augmentation
Statistically, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. This surgery allows women with small breasts to enhance the size and contour of their breasts to make them appear more attractive and proportionate with the rest of their body. Women with unevenly sized breasts can undergo the surgery to produce a symmetric appearance of the chest. This surgery involves the insertion of a saline or silicone gel implant over or under the pectoral muscle and under the breast tissue, to enhance the size and shape of the breast.
Fat Grafting
Fat grafting is also a form of breast augmentation procedure, however, does not require the use of implants. It is recommended for individuals who prefer to have “natural breasts” without the use of an implant and who desire a subtle size and fullness increase. The procedure involves the use of liposuction to transfer fat from another region of the patient’s body, including the breast, to the desired areas of the breasts. Minor contour irregularities and deformities can be improved with this technique as well.
Breast Lift
For some women, fluctuations in body weight, poor skin elasticity, pregnancy and breastfeeding result in the sagging of breasts. To counter the effects of gravity and correct sagging breasts, women can undergo a breast lift surgery. Unlike breast augmentation surgery, a breast implant is not required for this procedure, although patients will often choose to place an implant along with their breast lift for added fullness. This is referred to as an augmentation-mastopexy. This surgery can also correct asymmetry of the breasts and nipples. The procedures requires the tissue to be reshaped, excess skin removed, nipples repositioned and/or resized and the skin to be tightened to restore an uplifted position of the breasts.

Breast Reduction
In complete contrast to the breast augmentation surgery, breast reduction surgery is performed for women who present with back or shoulder pain or are socially uncomfortable due to the large size of their breasts. Breast reduction is also performed for men with gynecomastia, a condition characterized by enlarged breasts and/or puffy areolas. Removing the excessive breast tissue can help their chests retain a manly appearance. Since large breasts contain fat along with glandular tissue, the procedure might require the use of liposuction to assist with sculpting and reshaping the breasts. Similar to a Mastopexy or breast lift procedure, the breast reduction procedure will involve excising skin, repositioning areolas and will also include removal of the breast tissue itself before recreating a smaller breast.
