At What Age Can You Have Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast Augmentation With Implants

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), hundreds of thousands of women undergo breast augmentation procedures every year in the United States.

In fact, it is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the country. It is common for young women to ask if they are old enough for the surgery. Legally, any women over the age of 18 years old can undergo breast augmentation procedures, however there are several factors to consider before you make a decision regarding breast augmentation surgery as a young adult.

FDA Guidelines and Types of Implants

According to the FDA regulations, any woman above the age of 18 can undergo breast augmentation surgeries with saline implants. On the other hand, silicone based implants are currently only warrantied for use in women who are at least 22 years of age.

Growth and Physical Development of the Breast

Everyone’s body grows at different rates. The breasts development of two women of the same age may be at different stages. Some women complete breast development earlier than others. Growth following the surgery can have significant impact on the physical appearance of the breasts. For best results, plastic surgeons recommend the surgery only to women with fully developed breasts which have stopped growing.

Mental Development

As breast augmentation is an invasive surgical procedure, women undergoing the procedure should be mentally competent, emotionally stable and understand the indications and possible side effects of the surgery. Our clients are required to have realistic expectations and understand that breast augmentation surgery has long-lasting results. We advise our patients to undergo breast augmentation surgery only if it is for their own benefit, and not due to pressure from peers or their significant other.

Future Pregnancies

As mentioned in our previous article, breast implants will not affect the ability of a woman to get pregnant or breastfeed, however, the associated weight gain and stretched skin, can significantly change the results of a breast augmentation procedure. As a result, further revisions of the breast augmentation surgery may be required to restore the appearance of the breasts after the pregnancy. Thus, it is recommended for younger women to avoid the surgery if they are planning for pregnancy.
