ABOUT DR. GARTNER

WHAT SCLEROTHERAPY CAN DO FOR YOU

Spider veins and varicose veins can tarnish your complexion, and with age, they only get worse. These visible veins can be removed with sclerotherapy, a safe and nonsurgical treatment administered by injection only to achieve a high rate of satisfaction and permanent results. In fact, the study, Comparison of sclerotherapy, laser, and radiowave coagulation in treatment of lower extremity telangiectasias[1], found that sclerotherapy is the most efficient method of treating spider veins when compared to laser and radio wave technologies.

It is common for individuals with spider and varicose veins to experience some level of associated pain and discomfort. Fortunately, research has found that sclerotherapy can help. In the study, Resolution of pain associated with varicose and telangiectatic leg veins after compression sclerotherapy[2], the treatment was found to not just achieve a cosmetic improvement on the legs, but also provide relief of any pain or discomfort associated with the presence of both spider and varicose veins. Participants of the study reported an 85% improvement in pain and discomfort.

WHAT MAKES YOUR SCLEROTHERAPY PROCEDURE UNIQUE

Your treatment will be performed by a sclerotherapy specialist who has a gentle touch. This means that you won’t feel any pain–most patients have described the injection treatment as feeling like a mosquito bite.

You won’t experience any downtime because your treatment will be so gentle. You can return to work or other daily activities immediately following a treatment, although you may need to avoid vigorous physical activity for about 24 hours.

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure designed to eliminate visible spider veins and varicose veins. It is suitable for men and women.

You may be a candidate if you dislike the appearance of your visible veins or are experiencing associated discomfort, such as tenderness, swelling and pain.

Please note that before you consider sclerotherapy, you may want to first try making some lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, refraining from standing for long periods of time, elevating your legs while resting and wearing compression stockings. These may work for you.

YOUR TREATMENT

Even though sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment, you’ll have the comfort of knowing that your procedure will take place in a fully equipped state-of-the-art surgical facility A single procedure generally takes well under an hour to complete, however it depends on the number of veins you’d like to have treated.

Your treatment involves a series of pain-free injections of a specially formulated solution into the affected area. The solution causes the walls of the target vein to spasm, then stick together and harden (sclerose). In the weeks and months following treatment, the vein gradually fades then disappears. Spider veins generally take anywhere from three to six weeks to disappear, while larger varicose veins may take up to four months. The blood that would normally have circulated through a treated vein is naturally transferred to a healthy, unaffected vein in the area, therefore there is no adverse affect on your blood circulation.

You may require up to four sessions scheduled about a week apart to achieve your desired results.

LEARN ABOUT

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPIDER VEINS AND VARICOSE VEINS?

  • Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are normally 0.1mm-1mm in diameter while varicose veins have a diameter of more than 1mm.
  • Varicose veins can be red, blue or even the same colour as your skin. Spider veins tend to be blue or red.
  • Spider veins are located closer to the surface of your skin and look like thin jagged lines.
  • Varicose veins are more visible, appearing as bulging cords. They tend to affect the legs.

YOUR RECOVERY

Once your procedure is completed, you can get right back to your regular daily activities. However, it is important that you keep your circulation going by being physically active, within reason. Don’t strain yourself, but you should walk around. This will help minimize the risk of developing blood clots.

Dr. Gartner will give you a compression garment that you should wear for the advised period of time. You should also minimize sun exposure to the treated area, as it could cause permanent hyperpigmentation. If you must go out in the sun, cover up or protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen.

You’ll love the way your skin is more even toned, unblemished by unsightly veins!
